It is so enjoyable to stroll the streets during the holidays and end with a cozy dinner. Where else do you have access to 16 blocks of great restaurants, galleries, salons, and one of a kind boutiques?

As the economy is still challenged, this is a time of year that increased patronage brings a healthy vibrancy that keeps the unique spirit of the community alive.

As you will see in this issue, there are many local businesses in the neighborhood celebrating big anniversaries!! Congratulations to all of them….. as they have seen many changes throughout the years. It says a lot when businesses have been in this area for such a long time, reflecting strongly on the loyalty from the community. In addition to these businesses, there are plenty of new businesses that have chosen this unique community to plant their feet. As we have touched on in the past, it is so very important to continue to support them all. They are what makes Cherry Creek North the premier shopping neighborhood in Denver.

And there are so many good things going on this time of year! These next few months are filled with seasonal special events in Cherry Creek and the greater Denver area. Denver Arts Week, Buy Local Week, National Western Stock Show, just to name a few… Bringing many visitors to the area and featuring many local artists and businesses!

Please check our website for the Calendar of Events including special events for the Holidays and through the first part of 2012! Go to CherryCreekNow.com.

The chilled air and winter breezes generate chapped hands, chapped lips and uncomfortable facial dryness. How can we better prepare for the tough winter months ahead? How can we prevent discomfort and pain?

Start by finding a licensed skin care specialist. When visiting your local drug store or department store, searching for recommendations, it is often hard to find someone with the education needed to provide you with the right advice.

I always suggest to my clients that they come see me, another esthetician
or a dermatologist if they feel their skin is getting that bad. As an esthetician we can analyze your skin, your diet and your daily regimen. Skin care professionals use this information to determine the right products for your specific skin
care needs. Making an appointment with a professional does not mean that we will always suggest you use high-end products. There are many budget friendly purchases that will work just as well. It is our educational background on ingredients and their results that make the difference.

Adding more moisture is essential as well. The products that were used during the spring and summer will most likely not be enough during the harsh fall and winter. Look for products that are oil based rather than water based.

I like to use and recommend the Sanitas Skincare line. The line is biogenic and only utilizes products that you find in your skin; vitamins A, C, D and E. They are also filled with essential fatty acids. Another great thing to add this winter is a hyaluronic concentrate. This is a great additive to amplify the effect of any moisturizer. It penetrates the skin to bind with your moisturizer and produce a firming and plumping effect. This also helps to protect you from the damaging effects of free radicals.
Remember to look for a moisturizer with essential oils, humectants and add a hyaluronic acid for that added protection. Just one to two drops of the hyaluronic acid with your moisturizer and you are set.

Keep adding sunscreen is another crucial element to fighting the winter hazards our skin endures. Sunscreen is not just for summer anymore. The winter sun combined with the snow’s glare can still harm your skin.

When selecting a sunscreen, be sure to select a chemical-free broad spectrum sunscreen. Apply this to your skin 30 minutes before sun exposure for the best results.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate is another key element in my advice for every client. Drinking water is proven to keep your skin looking younger and less dehydrated. It is also crucial to improving your overall health.

Ban super hot soaks. As tempting as a hot soak in that amazing bathtub
or shower may seem this winter, it is actually working against you. The hot water breaks down the lipid barriers of your skin. This is detrimental to your body’s ability to retain moisture. I recommend a warm shower for a shorter duration of time during the winter to help lock in moisture.

2011 HOLIDAY TRENDS

LIPSTICK – Matte lipstick is in this holiday season. But, how do you wear it in Colorado? Oh! How we love the look! Follow these instructions and you too can indulge in the matte lipstick trend.

The key to pulling off this look for the Holiday season is to realize that your dry lips could be what is making this look so tricky. Don’t let that hold you back. Exfoliate.

Exfoliation is the first step to creating the flawless look your matte lipstick is meant to highlight. Without this step your lipstick is likely to show off any signs of a chapped lip. Begin by applying a soft scrub to your lips. Be sure to be gentle when doing this.

I like to use a combination of sugar and olive oil. Combine them into a paste and they work together to exfoliate and hydrate your lips. If you don’t have these items on hand try using a lip balm. Apply a generous amount to your lips and gently scrub the surface with a toothbrush

Hydrate. Moist lips are happy lips to all involved! Try conditioning your lips next with a non-petrolatum lip balm. After the lip balm settles wipe away the excess.

Follow up your hydration step with a lip liner. Use your lip liner as a base
for your lipstick by completely covering your lips. This helps intensify your color while giving it more staying power.

BROWS – If your eyes are the windows to your soul then your brows are the frame. The brow this season is dark, dramatic and full. The look is achieved by first letting your brows grow in a bit fuller, but well shaped. I also always suggest tweezing, never waxing. There is too much to lose way too quickly.

Next fill your brow in with a brow powder that matches your shade. I suggest using short little strokes to make it look more natural. When you are done filling them in apply a highlighting powder under your brow bone.

A great evening effect is darker brows. This is a great way to take you to any party from the office. Nothing says evening like dark, full dramatic brows.

EYE SHADOW – Think Heavy Metals: metallic, glittery eyelids make a statement in hues of silver, gold bronze and gunmetal grey. From shimmering sparkles to more muted mattes, the eyes are getting all of the attention. Take things down a notch by applying a shimmer shadow with hues of grey, purple or bronze to the lids only and line the eyes. Navy blue liner is also always great way to give an uplifting look to the eyes.

To make sure you are ready for the holiday party circuit a gem eye liner added to the already defined eye is a quick easy way.

Stimulate your Collagen in your early 30’s, it is a lot easier than bringing it back from the dead in your 40’s and after. With all of the creams, lotions, and potions on the market only 3 ingredients are what you need to look for to combat the test of time.

1. SPF – The true anti-ager using spf starting at a young age will prevent the aging process from happening. With sun exposure, we break down collagen, when that happens we cause wrinkles…so plan ahead, all parents talk to your kids. I always talk to my clients about using something, with a physical barrier, ie, zincoxide or tita- nium dioxide. These are chemical free and no toxic.

2. RETNOIDS – Vitamin A derivatives do it all. This vitamin will help you reduce wrinkles, fight brown spots, build Collagen and fight acne. Don’t be afraid of retnoids, the new generation of retinoid are totally dif- ferent then we used back in the 80’s. The retnoids today can be more gentle and start you out delicately. I often start my client out on a nice beginner and daily use. Retional call Rejuven- A by the brand called Sanitas, this product brightens, firms, and made for Sensitive skin.

3. PEPTIDES – Peptides are all about staying ahead of the pack with action packed proteins. Peptides are all about the building blocks for collagen in the surface of your skin. A simple way to think about peptides: amino acids that go down into the skin feeding the skin. Then your skin will produce more peptides in return. The third in- gredient of true anti-aging. Skin Services Important to Anti Aging: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, exfoliation:manuel or chemical, is another great option.

ANTI-AGING MAKEUP TIPS

Properly Treat and Prep your skin.

PRIMER – A good primer, though light as a feather, will retexturize the surface of the skin and add a vibrant appearance by providing the perfect base for achieving a natural uplifting appearance after foundation is applied. Make sure the primer is skin type correct, moisturizing for dry, mattifying for oily. Primer is applied after sunscreen and directly under foundation, under eyes and across the whole face.

CONCEALOR – When a concealer is carefully selected for color, texture and shade, it can literally, erase years from your appearance. Here are some keys to concealer: Stay clear of Pink concealer, as we age, we begin to naturally become more pink around the eyes. This causes us to appear tired. It dulls our eye color. Pink concealer accentuates the redness. Choose a Yellow shade of concealer to counteract the pink. Yellow will brighten the eye area and diminishes the appearance of dark circles.

With a clean face, look in the mirror. Observe areas where the darkness, redness and discoloration on your face. You will notice that it is against the inside corner of the eye next to the bridge of your nose. Around and under the rim of your eyes as well as around your nostrils.

TEXTURE – Select a concealer that is creamy, yet tacky. Apply concealoer with a firm, small bulb brush. Using the brush, gently apply the concealor to the areas, described above. Next, gently pat, (do not rub) concealor until it is blended. In areas that require special attention, a second application may be required. Setting concealer with a light powder will help it stay in place all day. Use a mineral powder or a simple white powder.

FOUNDATION – As with concealer, Foundation is all about color and texture. Never use a foundation shade that is darker than your natural color. Your natural color is the color of your body. Dark foundation shades will age your appearance, more quickly than a Nolan Miller gown! Most women will do very well with a foundation that has a yellow under base, as most skin has a yellow base. Years ago it was thought that a pink under base produced a “rosy glow” and was therefore more youthful and vibrant. In actuality, that “rosy glow” made women appear pasty and much older. Applying foundation with a high quality foundation brush will give a flawless finish.

BROWS – Think of brows as the frame for your most intriguing feature. If you have the slightest doubt about how to tweeze brows, have your tweezed by an expert. Use an eye brow applicator brush and a powder eye shadow a shade or two lighter than your hair color and fill and define your brow using little strokes. People with no brow should start with a pencil to fill them in. Then add brow powder to set the color.

EYES – Make your Eyes not your Eye Makeup Pop! Keep eye shadows to the more neutral tones, for a splash of color, add a violet or green shade on top of the neutral lid color. By applying your accent color in this manner, you will achieve a softer look. Navy liner and navy mascara are both brightening both to the eyes and the entire eye area. Most women as they age lose shape and need to use a base to hold color on all day long. Use this first to define any shadow, and then follow with desired color.

LIPSTICK – Stay away from deep dark shades, or shades that are overly bright. Stay away from dryer lipsticks as well, hydration is youth. Use the color of your own lips as a guide. A couple of shades darker or a couple of shades brighter than your natural lip color will make you look fresh and take years off your look. Soft pinks, Soft corals, Soft berries are best to uplift.

CHEEKS – Blush belongs on the Apple of your cheeks, not under the cheek bone. For easy, foolproof application, just smile while applying blusher to the apple. Cream blush for dryer, but be careful if someone has color on the surface…. Add a powder to the cheeks.

BRONZER – If, during the summer months you want to add a sunny glow to your complexion, do so with a Bronzer. Again, be careful when choosing a Bronzer that is the correct shade for you. Bronzer should be only one to three shades darker than your skin. Your goal should be to achieve a look as if you have just had a day in the park. As a woman ages, try a liquid bronzer or a crème … Adding hydration to the face is always key. Keep cheek color to the rosy, more natural pink tones. Remember this key. As you get older, “Less is Simply-Moore” Embrace the age that we are and look the best you can at it!! In these simple steps a person is sure to look softer and more elegant.

The growing popularity and increasing value of hard-to-find ledger art has brought many interested visitors to West SouthWest gallery to view and buy these historic documents.

The term “ledger art” originated from the inspired narratives of the Plains Indians from the 1860’s to 1930. When they ran out of buffalo hides or other animal skins on which to paint, they turned to readily available pages of ledgers owned by accountants, traders, explorers, missionaries and soldiers who kept inventories and accounting records. These ledger books, easily portable, became a form of canvas for the Indians’ historical documentation, often drawing over the writings of the previous owner.

One of today’s most prominent ledger artists is Terrance Guardipee, a Blackfeet Native American from Browning, Montana. His use of bold, brilliant colors to depict the history and cultural exploits of his Blackfeet ancestors seem to jump off the pages of the antique ledgers and other old documents he can find. ” I want my ledger paintings to reflect the strength and honor of my Blackfeet ancestors through the use of modern styles, while incorporating their ancient ways and traditions”. Terrance’s work has brought him international acclaim and numerous prestigious awards including First Place in his category at the Santa Fe Indian Market for three consecutive years. His art has been featured at the Smithsonian and the Heard, Eiteljorg, CM Russell and Gene Autry Museums.

Merle Locke, an Ogalala Lakota Indian from South Dakota, has also brought ledger art to new generations. He has spent years tracking down old ledger books among the Lakota and Sioux tribes to paint their pages with historical accounts of their battles and cultural events. He uses watercolor to great effect, creating contrast between the tight script of the ledger page and the free flowing lines and bright colors inherent in his painting style. A true traditionalist, Merle gives his warriors coup sticks instead of bows and arrows because the Lakota believe that it is more honorable to touch the enemy than to kill him.

Dudley Smith, owner of West SouthWest gallery since 1995, takes great pride in his ability to discover rare and unusual arts and crafts on his numerous trips throughout the west and southwest. His discovery of the ledger art by Guardipee and Locke has provided the gallery with an exclusive opportunity to display and sell their unique style and media.

If there is one outlet that one has control over during this recovery it is personal appearance. A splash of bright red on the lips and Blue Sky shadow and you’ve taken command of your day.

The Next Big Trend:

Bright Beautiful EYES! Think Rich Limes, Bold Purples, the Clearest of Blue Skies! The way it was shown on the Spring 2011 Runway were Bold and Solid. This is not perfect for women of all ages, so make it work with the blending of a more natural tone of Brown or Grey, this will give it a more simple blending ability.

When using a bright eye, keep the lips soft……either a Pale Pink, or a light color. The Pale Pink was a big trend in many Shows….Michael Kors for one.

When using the light lips, and the bright eyes…..this always works with lining and defining. Line the eyes, full lashes and a healthy touch of color in the cheeks!

Cheeks:

Play and have fun…..a translucent coral is an easy way to bring spring in quickly. A crème form is a great thing to look for in our Colorado climate. This is sure to give you translucent color and staying power all in one. Darker skin tones can always use more color, medium tones can use a darker or lighter version, and paler skin bright and sheer.

Lips:

A Return to RED! Off the Spring Runway Shows…… we saw everything from a slight colored eye to the BRIGHTEST OF BRIGHTS….. a red LIP: Full of Color and Texture! The lips being a bold Red, choose a texture. A bold Red gloss, a matte long lasting Red, or add a glisten of soft shimmering gloss. . Gloss is wonderful way to bring the red tone for a person who does not want a lot of color, but be current. REMEMBER…Red does not have to be the reds from your mothers, make it yours, and own it!

Purples/Roses:

Strong color, fresh look. Purple is a strong trend for the eyes this spring. We are seeing purple running the gamut, from soft lilacs to heavy and deep eggplants. Shimmer is a good thing to look for, but just remember shimmer is a soft glow, frost is a strong and heavy shimmer (this often shows the dry imperfections of your skin).

How are we seeing purple applied? Use an eye shadow base to hold the color on, they usually come in a crème form and can be used under crèmes and powder eye shadows. Purples are color tones that work with many eye colors. I have a feeling that if you have never tried purples, they might have a lasting impression on some of you past spring 2010.

Blush:

Pink, fresh and pretty. A quick pick- me-up for a tired feeling and looking person…a POP of pink. Add brightness to the apples of your cheeks, and surely it will turn the day around. Many people are afraid of pink, but remember when you have been exercising for 10-15 minutes usually a brightness comes to the cheeks naturally. So pink can truly be natural looking.
